Nigerian musician Tems has disclosed that she had to postpone the release of her debut album due to a “serious illness.” Try Me, the singer’s 2019 smash song, was published after her self-produced debut single, “Mr Rebel,” which she had released in 2018.
The song “Essence,” which Tems—born Temilade Openiyi—collaborated on with Wizkid, helped launch her career in 2020. “For Broken Ears,” her debut extended play (EP), was released in the same year.
In an interview with the New York Times, the hitmaker of “You and Me” said that her first album was initially supposed to come out in 2021, but at the same time she released her second EP, “If Orange Was a Place.”
Tems stated that she had to have surgery and go through a six-month recuperation period, but she did not say what kind of sickness she was fighting. “The essence of a warrior is perseverance.
You walk on your knees and fight on your knees with what you have, and that’s good enough, even if they cut your leg,” she remarked.
The singer received her first-ever Grammy award in February 2023. She won the “Best Melodic Rap Performance” award for her performance in Future’s 2022 smash single “Wait for U,” which features Drake.
The singer received a “Breakthrough Award” in March at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards. In June, Tems’ much-awaited debut album, “Born in the Wild,” will be available.
