The Nigerian artist Yemi Alade has criticised the state government of Lagos for demolishing buildings in Arowojogbe in Mende estate.
The state administration started demolishing some Mende estate buildings last weekend, which infuriated some locals on social media. The Lagos government, according to a building occupant, merely provided a two-hour warning. “We have two hours to park out according to the Lagos state administration.
Where do they expect us to go? We are in Nigeria, and we have been given two hours,” the local added.
Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos’ commissioner for the environment and water resources, disclosed on Sunday that part of the estate’s structures were destroyed to prevent the mainland from flooding. In a barrage of comments on X following the house destruction, Alade asserted that the state government is providing Nigerians with disincentives to purchase real estate in Lagos. According to Alade, the demolition of the mansion will cause the “devaluation of lands in Lagos.”
The singer-songwriter further demanded that the state government reimburse the money that the impacted lawful purchasers had paid for their land. “Thank you for providing millions of people like myself with an excuse not to invest in Lagos real estate by following @followlasg.
